Graphics Benchmark Software: GPU-Z Review
April 14, 2008 6:23 pm Benchmark Software
GPU-Z was created by the owner of TechPowerUp!, W1zzard, to offer a similar style of information retrieval that CPU-Z does, but for graphics cards. GPU-Z is a freeware application that gathers your graphics card’s details and provides them to you all in one easy to understand program. It is currently compatible with all versions of Microsoft Windows from Windows 2000 to Vista and is touted to be compatible with nearly every brand of graphics card on the market to date.
Do not confuse GPU-Z with being an overclocking utility, as it simply retrieves the information from your graphics card and doesn’t allow you to modify any of the settings. This doesn’t mean that GPU-Z is useless however, as the application can provide you with much more information than Windows Hardware Manager can. Also, just like CPU-Z, GPU-Z doesn’t require an installation as it is only one executable file and allows users to validate their GPU results online. This allows the user to compare their results with others utilizing the same graphics card and also post the information in forums if they need support.
Running GPU-Z will provide you with a read out of the following information:
- Graphics Card
- Name
- GPU
- Revision
- Technology
- Die Size
- BIOS Version
- Device ID
- Subvendor
- ROPs
- Bus Interface
- Shaders
- DirectX Support
- Pixel Fillrate
- Texture Fillrate
- Memory Type
- Bus Width
- Memory Size
- Bandwidth
- Driver Version
- GPU Clock
- Memory
- Shader
- Default Clock
- Memory
- Shader
- NVIDIA SLI / ATI CrossFire
- Sensors
- GPU Core Clock
- GPU Memory Clock
- GPU Temperature
- PCB Temperature
- Fan Speed %
- Fan Speed RPM
- Validation
- Private Project
- Bug Report
For those of you using multiple graphics cards through SLI or CrossFire, you will find that the application allows you to select which graphics card you wish to gather the information from. You are also able to save the bios file of each individual card, or upload it to the online database for other users to troubleshoot or use themselves.
The validation aspect of GPU-Z is the true benefit of using this program when you’re overclocking your graphics card. Overclocking the GPU on another program will provide you with the results that you were looking for, but the validation process will actually allow you to compare your results with others to determine if you have actually reached your max overclocking capactiy.
Below are screen shots of GPU-Z running on my own stock system. Click on the thumbnails to view each of the panels in GPU-Z with information already detailed out in them.
