Overclocking the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 3.20GHz One of the fastest and most impressive CPUs out to date, the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 3.20 GHz, has officially been overclocked. The processor on it’s own is impressive enough to convince some of the most avid overclocking enthusiasts to just let it be, but it looks like K|ngp|n wasn’t interested in just letting the processor perform on its own.

The Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 operates at a default clock speed of 3.2 GHz with a front side bus of 1600 MHz. Normally, the system runs at a temperature of 63 °C with a 1.212V DC Core current running through it. You’re also looking at 12 MB L2 Advanced Smart Cache Memory from this chip, as it sits in its 771-pin LGA Socket J seating. So what exactly did K|ngp|n do to it?

Apparently, the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 was popped into an Intel Skulltrail motherboard and put to the test. For those of you who don’t know, the Skulltrail is capable of supporting dual quad-core Penryn Xeon CPUs, SLI graphics cards, 4x PCI Express x16 slots, 2x PCI Slots, 6x SATA Ports, 2x eSATA ports, 6x USB ports, 1x FireWire port, and a Gigabit Lan. The results he achieved were pretty remarkable too, but definitely above the what the processor should be safely running at.

The overclocked Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 went from 3.20 GHz to 6 GHz, a 1600 MHz FSB to a 1716 MHz FSB, and a stable voltage of 1.212V to the insane 1.953V. Did we forget to mention that this was PER CORE?!

While this is definitely a step forward in the world of overclocking, the average person may find overclocking the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 a bit to expensive of a task for them to want to endure. Perhaps learning how to overclock a core 2 duo might be an easier task for you to start with? But if you’ve got a stomach of steel and a deep wallet, make sure you look into getting the proper overclocking benchmark software and that you know how to properly cool your overclocked components before you get started.
